The Patterdale Terrier, or more correctly referred to as the the Fell Terrier, are used for a similar purpose as the Jack Russell Terriers - to be a working terrier that can follow it's quarry to ground. Physically they should posses the structure that allows them to do this type of work, a balanced and proportionate body, a well laid back shoulder, and most importantly a narrow chest. Mentally these terriers should have a temperament that makes them a pleasure to work with in the field. Patterdales are a bold and assertive terrier, more so than the JRT, but should never be aggressive towards other terriers on the hunt. A good working terrier must also be able to use it's brain and not go in and attack any quarry without some sense of self preservation. The Patterdale, while a working dog through and through, should always remain biddable.
Generally these terriers are more laid back in personality that the JRT in the home, but in the field they are all business. Unfortunately it is this tenacity when working that has led to a number of these dogs being bred as underground fighting dogs. While they are a harder nosed terrier bred to retrieve quarry from the earth they should know the difference between quarry and companion. Our terriers all live together peacefully and Patton, our intact male, often takes on babysitting duties with young puppies. They will not however tolerate living with other small pets and should never be kept with cats, small rodents, etc - their working instincts are simply too strong.
Anyone who is seriously considering a Patterdale would be well advised to research the breed thoroughly. They are not intended to simply be a pet, nor do many possess the desire to be highly competitive sport dogs. It should always be kept in the forefront of one's mind that Patterdales are a working dog, and as such can be an incredibly rewarding partner to an individual who is looking to provide them the opportunity to shine doing the tasks they were bred for.
